Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (or you can substitute with ground turkey)

8 oz fresh mushrooms, sliced

1 medium onion, diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

1 tsp Dijon mustard

Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

8 oz Swiss cheese, shredded

4 large eggs

1 cup milk

1 cup seasoned breadcrumbs

1 tbsp olive oil

Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). This ensures it is hot enough when you’re ready to bake.

Sauté the Vegetables: In a large skillet, pour in the olive oil and heat it over medium heat. Once hot, add the diced onion. Sauté for about 3-4 minutes, or until the onion is soft and translucent. Then, add the sliced mushrooms and continue to cook for an additional 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are browned and tender. In the last minute of cooking, stir in the minced garlic and cook until fragrant.

Cook the Ground Meat: Introduce your ground beef (or turkey) to the skillet with the onion and mushroom mixture. Use a wooden spoon to break apart the meat, combining it well with the sautéed vegetables. Cook for about 6-8 minutes, or until the meat is fully browned. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, and season generously with salt and pepper. Once done, remove the skillet from heat and allow to cool slightly.

Prepare the Egg Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, crack the eggs and add the milk. Whisk them together until they are well combined and slightly frothy. Season the mixture lightly with salt and pepper for an extra layer of flavor.

Assemble the Casserole: Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish. Start by spreading the cooked ground beef mixture evenly across the bottom. Next, evenly sprinkle half of the shredded Swiss cheese over the meat mixture. Following that, distribute the seasoned breadcrumbs evenly on top of the cheese. Pour the egg mixture carefully over everything, ensuring it soaks through the breadcrumbs for added moisture. Finally, top with the remaining Swiss cheese to create a delicious melted layer.

Bake: Transfer the assembled casserole into the preheated oven. Bake for approximately 35-40 minutes. The casserole is done when the egg is set and the top layer is golden brown and bubbly.

Serve: Once baked, remove the casserole from the oven and let it cool for about 5-10 minutes before slicing. This cooling time enhances the flavors and makes it easier to cut. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley for a pop of color and freshness before serving. Slice into squares and savor the delightful, hearty flavors!
