Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast

1 teaspoon sugar

3/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup warm water (about 110°F/45°C)

1/4 cup milk (warmed until just warm to the touch)

2 tablespoons olive oil

3 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted)

4 cloves garlic (minced)

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried parsley

1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for a spicy kick)

Freshly grated Parmesan cheese (for topping)

Additional salt to taste

Instructions

Activate the yeast: In a small mixing bowl, combine the warm water and sugar, then sprinkle the active dry yeast on top. Stir gently to dissolve and let it sit undisturbed for 5-10 minutes or until it becomes frothy on the surface.

Mix the dough: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour and salt. Create a well in the center and pour in the activated yeast mixture, warmed milk, and olive oil. Stir with a spatula or wooden spoon until the ingredients begin to come together to form a cohesive dough.

Knead the dough: Lightly flour a clean surface and transfer the dough onto it. Knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes until it feels smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, gradually sprinkle in a bit more flour as needed.

First rise: Lightly grease a large bowl with a bit of olive oil. Place the kneaded dough in the bowl, cover it with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm area for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.

Prepare the garlic butter: In a small saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over low heat. Once melted, add the minced garlic, dried oregano, dried parsley, red pepper flakes (if using), and a pinch of salt. Stir well to combine, then remove from heat and set aside.

Shape the breadsticks: After the dough has risen, punch it down gently to release the air. Transfer it to a floured surface and roll it out into a rectangle about 1/2 inch thick. Cut the dough into strips approximately 1 inch wide and 6 inches long for each breadstick.

Second rise: Arrange the shaped breadsticks on a lined baking sheet with space in between each one to allow for expansion. Cover them loosely with a cloth and let them rise for an additional 30 minutes.

Preheat the oven: While the breadsticks are completing their second rise, preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) to ensure it’s hot when you’re ready to bake.

Brush and bake: Once the second rise is complete, brush the breadsticks generously with the prepared garlic butter mixture. Sprinkle freshly grated Parmesan cheese over the top of each breadstick for added flavor.

Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake the breadsticks for 12-15 minutes, or until they turn a beautiful golden brown.

Serve: After baking, remove the breadsticks from the oven and brush any remaining garlic butter mixture over the tops to keep them moist and flavorful. Serve warm with marinara sauce or your favorite dipping sauce.
