Ingredients

1 loaf of brioche or challah bread, cut into 1-inch cubes (approximately 10-12 cups)

1 cup fresh strawberries, sliced

4 large eggs

2 cups whole milk

1/2 cup heavy cream

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 cup cream cheese, softened

2 tablespoons powdered sugar (optional, for serving)

Maple syrup, for drizzling

Fresh mint leaves, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish or casserole dish generously with butter or cooking spray to prevent sticking.

Prepare the Bread: Evenly distribute the bread cubes in the greased baking dish. Scatter the sliced strawberries throughout the bread cubes, ensuring they are mixed in for an even distribution.

Make the Custard Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, vigorously whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and salt. Whisk until the mixture is smooth and the sugar has completely dissolved.

Combine Cream Cheese: In a separate small bowl, blend the softened cream cheese and optional powdered sugar until creamy and smooth. Drop spoonfuls of this mixture over the bread and strawberries, then use a knife or spatula to gently swirl it into the custard mixture, creating a marbled pattern.

Pour Custard Over Bread: Slowly pour the custard mixture over the bread cubes and strawberries, making sure to saturate all the pieces of bread. If necessary, gently press down on the bread with your hands to ensure complete coverage.

Soak: Cover the baking dish tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for a minimum of 30 minutes to allow the bread to soak up the custard. For optimal flavor and texture, let it soak overnight in the refrigerator.

Bake: After soaking, remove the plastic wrap and place the dish in the preheated oven. Bake for approximately 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.

Serve: Once baked, allow the French toast bake to cool for 5-10 minutes before serving. Drizzle generously with maple syrup, dust with additional powdered sugar if desired, and garnish with fresh mint leaves for a pop of color.

Enjoy: Serve warm and savor the delightful combination of creamy custard, juicy strawberries, and sweet, fluffy bread!
