Ingredients

4 large whole wheat pita breads

1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon sea salt

Optional: 1 teaspoon vanilla extract or a pinch of ground nutmeg for an aromatic twist

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). This ensures that your pita chips will bake evenly and become perfectly crunchy.

Prepare the Pita: Take each pita bread and slice it into 8 triangles. To do this, first cut the pita in half, then take each half and cut it into quarters.

Make the Cinnamon Sugar Mix: In a small bowl, combine the granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, and sea salt. Mix thoroughly until the ingredients are well incorporated. If you’re opting for a flavor boost, add the ground nutmeg or vanilla extract to the olive oil in the next step.

Brush with Olive Oil: In a separate bowl, mix the olive oil with optional vanilla extract (if using). Using a pastry brush, coat both sides of each pita triangle generously with the olive oil mixture to enhance flavor and crispiness.

Coat with Cinnamon Sugar: After brushing all the pita triangles, liberally sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture over both sides. Make sure each chip is well-coated for that delicious, sweet flavor.

Arrange for Baking: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place the coated pita triangles in a single layer on the sheet, ensuring they are not overcrowded to allow for even baking.

Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 10 to 12 minutes. Keep a close eye on them; they should turn golden brown and be crisp but can burn quickly if left unattended.

Cool and Store: Once baked, allow the chips to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes. They will become crunchier as they cool. Transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely, and then store in an airtight container for up to a week.
