Ingredients

2 cups rolled oats

1 cup unsweetened applesauce

1 large apple, peeled and diced (approximately 1 cup)

1/2 cup almond butter (or you can substitute with peanut butter)

1/4 cup honey or maple syrup

1/2 cup chopped nuts (such as walnuts, pecans, or almonds)

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup raisins or dried cranberries (optional)

1/2 cup dark chocolate chips (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare an 8x8 inch (or 9x9 inch) baking dish by lining it with parchment paper, ensuring you leave some overhanging paper to assist with removing the bars after baking.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the rolled oats, chopped nuts, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and salt. Use a spoon or spatula to stir the mixture well, ensuring all dry ingredients are evenly distributed.

Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the unsweetened applesauce, almond butter, and your choice of honey or maple syrup. Continue whisking until the mixture is completely smooth and well blended.

Incorporate Apples: Gently fold in the diced apple along with the optional ingredients, such as raisins and chocolate chips, into the wet mixture. This will add a burst of flavor and sweetness.

Combine Mixtures: Pour the wet ingredients into the bowl with the dry oat mixture. Stir everything together until all the dry ingredients are fully coated and the mixture is evenly combined.

Transfer to Pan: Carefully spread the mixture into the prepared baking pan, using a spatula to ensure it is evenly distributed. Firmly press down on the mixture to help it hold together during baking.

Bake: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes. Look for a golden brown color around the edges and a firm center to know they’re done.

Cool Down: Once baked, remove the pan from the oven and allow the bars to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Then, lift the entire batch out using the parchment paper overhang, and place them on a wire rack to cool completely.

Cut into Bars: After the bars have cooled completely, use a sharp knife to slice them into squares or rectangles, depending on your preferred serving size.

Storage: Store any leftover bars in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week. For longer freshness, you can refrigerate the bars.
